Professor Sally Cripps

Sally Cripps is the Director of the Centre for Translational Data Science, University of Sydney and a Professor of Statistics, School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sydney, Australia. She was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellow 2014-2018 and is currently Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre Data Analytics for Resources and Environments (DARE). Sally is also Chair of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis’s section Bayesian Education and Research in Practice.

Cripps’s research focus is the development of new and novel probabilistic models which are motivated by the need to solve an applied problem with potential for impact. She has particular expertise in the use of mixture models for complex phenomenon, modelling longitudinal data, nonparametric regression, the spectral analysis of time series and in the construction of transitions kernels in MCMC schemes which efficiently explore posterior distributions of interest.

Gradient Institute

Bill is the Chief Executive of Gradient Institute, a not-for-profit research institute for progressing the research, design, development and adoption of ethical AI systems.

Bill has spent more than 20 years leading teams of researchers and software engineers to develop novel computer-based technologies and get these into widespread use. He has led research and development for global technology companies (Canon and Unisys) and government-funded research institutions (CSIRO and NICTA) and been on the executive teams of three leading Australian science and technology organisations (CiSRA, NICTA and CSIRO’s Data61).

Before co-founding Gradient Institute, he was Director of Engineering and Design at Data61 where he led a team of 100 staff working on AI and machine learning (including ethically-aware machine learning), computational law, data privacy and geospatial systems.

He designed and taught a Masters course in IT Innovation at University of Sydney covering topics including disruptive innovation, open innovation and organisational culture for innovation. He has sat on several government committees influencing data policy and advisory groups at two Australian universities. He has degrees in computer science, history of art and cognitive science.
