The last hurrah! Come enjoy some refreshments and special memories as we send off local Peoplecare CEO Michael Bassingthwaighte AM into retirement.

Michael has been a respected business leader in our local area since 1973 and at Peoplecare from 1982. In that time Michael has led Peoplecare’s contribution to local charities, community events and contracting services with local businesses, picking up a swag of business awards along the way.

Peoplecare, the Wollongong-based not-for-profit health insurer, has enjoyed sustained success during Michael’s tenure, evolving from a closed medical fund for Lysaght’s steelworkers to today’s health fund open to all Australians. Michael has brought his calm business savvy to the job along with his strong ethical desire to do the right thing by people. This has served Peoplecare very well, as it continues to outperform the health insurance industry on member growth, member satisfaction, customer service, employment growth and employee satisfaction.

Peoplecare’s latest accolades include being named an Aon Best Employer in 2017, achieving the highest Net Supporters score of any open health fund and earning the title of the number 1 call centre of all health funds (both from Ipsos research 2017).

Michael’s success continues to flow back in benefits to the Illawarra. Peoplecare employs around 175 staff and has been adding around 25 full-time jobs each year to its four local locations, reducing the need for many thankful locals having to commute to Sydney for rewarding work.

Wollongong’s “much loved boss” deserves a toast or two. Come celebrate in style to farewell Michael and join Peoplecare in welcoming Dr Melinda Williams to the role of CEO.

Are your casuals really casual?

‘Wage theft is a new business model for too many employers’ says Sally McManus, Secretary of the ACTU.

Casual workers and independent contractors are at the heart of a bitter national debate fuelled by a revitalised union movement.

Employers must contend with flawed workplace legislation, an increasingly litigious workforce, and a hard-nosed regulator (Fair Work Ombudsman) with increased powers to prosecute and punish. The risk to business is escalating.

Making up over 20% of our workforce, growing numbers of employers are being penalised for failing to meettheir obligations to casual workers under the relevant modern award – mostly through oversight.

High risk surrounds a ‘regular and systematic’ casual, due to potential classification as a permanent employee by the Ombudsman. Resulting claims of underpayment and unfair dismissal can open the door to hefty back payments for leave, plus fines of up to $63,000 per breach.
